GE Teams with NASA on Hybrid-electric Passport Engine – AIN, June 20

GE Aerospace is working with NASA to modify the company’s Passport 20 engine with hybrid-electric components to test under the NASA Hybrid thermally Efficient Core project that aims to reduce fuel burn, AIN reported. GE hopes to use these engines on next generation single-aisle airliners. This work builds on GE Aerospace and NASA’s concurrent work on the NASA Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration program, which itself looks to rapidly mature electric propulsion technologies to start electrifying commercial airlines in 2035.

MagniX Enters Energy Storage Race with Samson Batteries – AIN, June 25

MagniX, a U.S. electric propulsion systems developer, revealed plans to produce the new lithium-ion Samson range of batteries for aviation applications, AIN reported. The new batteries are expected to deliver an energy density of 300 watt-hours per kilogram, with a service life of over 1,000 discharge cycles. MagniX intends to use these batteries in energy storage for its family of electric propulsion systems with power ranging from 350 to 650 kilowatts.

Airbus Study: Fleet Upgrades Motivated by Sustainability, SAF – AIN, June 25

An Airbus business unit commissioned a study that found 79 percent of senior U.S. business executives from companies that lease or own private jets see sustainability and sustainable fuels as a top reason for considering upgrading fleets in the next few years, AIN reported. The study found the second biggest factor driving upgrades is increased emphasis on operating costs but only 14 percent cite range as a reason to upgrade.

Army Plans To Field More Than 1,000 Switchblade 600 Attack Drones For Replicator

The Army plans to buy and field more than a thousand Switchblade 600 loitering munitions over the next year for the Pentagon’s Replicator initiative, a senior service official has said.

Gen. James Mingus, the Army’s vice chief of staff, provided an update on quantities for the AeroVironment-built attack drone during a House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee field hearing at the Defense Innovation Unit’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., on June 21.

“That was an innovation that we had worked collectively together, it’s a loitering munition, which we then included as part of Replicator Tranche One,” Mingus said. “We are now going to scale and scope that to over 1,000 [systems] here in the next year or so.”

The Pentagon in early May confirmed that AeroVironment’s Switchblade 600 was one of the capabilities selected for mass production under the first tranche of its Replicator initiative.

“U.S.-supplied Switchblade drones have already demonstrated their utility in Ukraine, and this system will provide additional capability to U.S. forces,” the Pentagon said in a statement at the time.

Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks first announced the Replicator initiative in late August 2023, detailing the effort to produce and field thousands of “all-domain attritable autonomous systems, or ADA2 capabilities, over the coming 18-24 months “to help us overcome [China’s] biggest advantage, which is mass.”

Hicks last month confirmed the Pentagon recently began delivering the first unmanned systems for its Replicator initiative. 

DoD has declined to disclose many details on Replicator, to include naming specific systems involved or breaking down funding lines, with the department having reiterated that the first tranche involved “certain capabilities that remain classified, including others in the maritime domain and some in the counter-UAS portfolio.”

Merlin To Acquire EpiSci In Hookup Of AI Pilot Startups To Offer Complete Solution – June 13

Merlin on Thursday said it has agreed to acquire fellow startup EpiSci in a deal that would combine complementary autonomous capabilities to offer a full-stack solution for artificial intelligence-piloted military aircraft.

Merlin said the acquisition would position it at the front of the autonomous aviation industry. Shield AI is another competitor in this space.

Merlin has focused its autonomy software on “98 percent of flying,” which is the aviate, navigate, and communicate, which essentially is how a plane flies, lands, and interacts with air traffic control, Matt George, the company’s CEO, told Defense Daily during a virtual interview. EpiSci’s tactical AI autonomy brings the dogfighting, swarming, and the “critical sort of reinforcement learning,” he said.

The acquisition will create an end-to-end AI pilot solution, George said.

“So, through this sort of unique combination this is truly an industry first, nobody else has this combination,” he said. “No one. So, by being able to go do that, we’re able to go offer a really unique solution to whatever the next 100 years of aviation starts to look like.”

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close within 90 days, were not disclosed. Merlin has about 130 employees and EpiSci about 60.

Both EpiSci’s autonomy pilot and Merlin’s software have flown on various platforms, including the Air Force’s X-62A Variable In-Flight Simulation Test Aircraft, a modified F-16 that recently flew Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall and a safety pilot for an autonomous flight from Edwards AFB, Calif. Shield AI and PhysicsAI also flew their AI pilot algorithms on the X-62.

EpiSci has said their software on flight with Kendall “demonstrated the longest single engagement and performed the only high-aspect, unscripted engagement.” It also said that based on fighter pilot feedback, that in addition to live-flight demonstrations, its agents were assessed as the “most trustable” within visual range combat autonomy.

Merlin and EpiSci combined have had their autonomy software on more than 23 unique platforms to also include the Cessna Caravan, F-16, KC-135 aerial refueling tanker, unmanned surface vessels, and small unmanned aircraft systems.

“By merging Merlin, we are choosing to deliver our TacticalAI autonomy software suite to the marketplace at significantly accelerated timelines and with greater impact,” Bo Ryu, founder and CEO of EpiSci, said in a statement. Once the transaction closes, Ryu will continue to run EpiSci.

This week, Boston-based Merlin received a $105 million contract from U.S. Special Operations Command to provide automation to reduce aircrew workload on C-130J aircraft. For this effort, Merlin will phase in its software aboard the C-130J with human in the flight deck as a monitor, George said.

This will allow the aircraft to operate with reduced crew, an important consideration given the shortage of Air Force pilots, he said.

EpiSci, which is based in Poway, Calif., this week made two announcements related to its AI pilot work for the Defense Department. On Wednesday, the company said it and teammate PhysicsAI received a $6 million, 18-month contract to develop tactical AI algorithms for teams of aircraft operating beyond visual range for air combat missions under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Artificial Intelligence Reinforcement program.

The company also received a follow-on contract from the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific to continue developing domain and vehicle-agnostic mission autonomy applications under Project Overwatch. In the last six months, EpiSci’s autonomy software has been integrated and operated on 12 uncrewed airborne and maritime platform types, the Ryu said.

George said that the acquisition will also allow Merlin to bring end-to-end AI pilot solutions to commercial aircraft too and build on aircraft data obtained through manned flights. “Autonomy is great until something unexpected happens or the script ends,” so the software can benefit from the creative experiences of human pilots as they cope with different crises and emergencies, he said.

No financial advisers were used on the deal, George said.

AV Successfully Flight Tests JUMP 20 VTOL UAS With A Heavy Fuel Engine

ARLINGTON, Va., June 18, 2024 – AeroVironment (AV) successfully demonstrated its JUMP® 20 uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) with a heavy fuel engine. The higher horsepower and lower fuel burn rate provided by the heavy fuel engine expands the capabilities of AV’s proven JUMP 20 platform. Integration of the heavy fuel engine further establishes the JUMP 20 as a multi-domain multi-mission UAS capable of autonomously operating in challenging conditions.

“The addition of a heavy fuel engine to the JUMP 20 provides global forces an unparalleled VTOL solution with a longer operational lifespan, greater performance and efficient fuel consumption. It is well suited for land and sea domains where available fuel sources could be dictated by the respective logistics support plan,” said Shane Hastings, AV’s vice president and general manager of Medium UAS. “Heavy fuel compatibility continues to be a strong requirement for many customers, and we’ve made great strides in making our proven JUMP 20 fully compliant with these requirements.”

AV’s JUMP 20 is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), fixed-wing UAS with 13+ hours of endurance and an operational range of 185 km (115 mi). The 15 hp engine is purpose-built for uncrewed systems and capable of running on multiple fuels and gasoline. With over 15 hp output, the high endurance, minimal fuel burn engine also requires less frequent maintenance cycles and overhauls. It is lighter than traditional gasoline engines and has an auto-start capability that delivers customers a simplified UAS requiring less operator engagement to operate and sustain.

“With successful test flights under our belt, AV is excited to continue system testing and further optimizing JUMP 20 with heavy fuel capabilities. Helicopter Operator Teams with Airbus To Prepare eVTOL Air Services – AIN, June 6

Avincis, a European helicopter operator, signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus to develop plans for eVTOl aircraft operations, AIN reported. Avincis currently operates 60 Airbus rotorcraft as par of its 200 aircraft fleet, which focuses on emergency medical support and missions like firefighting in Europe, Mozambique and China. Under this partnership, Avincis wil help Airbus define mission profiles for its CityAirbus eVTOL. That the company plans to have a range of about 50 miles.

World’s first in-flight study of commercial aircraft using 100% sustainable aviation fuel show significant non-CO2 emission reductions

Airbus – Berlin, 6 June 2024 – Results from the world’s first in-flight study of the impact of using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on both engines of a commercial aircraft show a reduction in soot particles and formation of contrail ice crystals compared to using conventional Jet A-1 fuel. 

The ECLIF3 study, in which Airbus, Rolls-Royce, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and SAF producer Neste collaborated, was the first to measure the impact of 100% SAF use to emissions from both engines of an Airbus A350 powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines and followed by a DLR chase plane.

Compared to a reference Jet A-1 fuel, the number of contrail ice crystals per mass of unblended SAF consumed was reduced by 56%, which could significantly reduce the climate-warming effect of contrails.

Global climate model simulations conducted by DLR were used to estimate the change in the energy balance in Earth’s atmosphere – also known as radiative forcing – by contrails. The impact of contrails was estimated to be reduced by at least 26 percent with 100% SAF use compared to contrails resulting from the Jet A-1 reference fuel used in ECLIF3. These results show that using SAF in flight could significantly reduce the climate impact of aviation in the short term by reducing non-CO2 effects such as contrails, in addition to reducing CO2 emissions over the lifecycle of SAF.

“The results from the ECLIF3 flight experiments show how the use of 100 percent SAF can help us to significantly reduce the climate-warming effect of contrails, in addition to lowering the carbon footprint of flying – a clear sign of the effectiveness of SAF towards climate-compatible aviation”, said Markus Fischer, DLR Divisional Board Member for Aeronautics.

Mark Bentall, head of Research & Technology Programme, Airbus, said : “We already knew that sustainable aviation fuels could reduce the carbon footprint of aviation. Thanks to ECLIF studies, we now know that SAF can also reduce soot emissions and ice particulate formation that we see as contrails. This is a very encouraging result, based on science, which shows just how crucial sustainable aviation fuels are for decarbonising air transport”.

“SAF is widely recognized as a crucial solution to mitigating the climate impact of the aviation sector, both in the short term as well as the longer term. The results from the ECLIF3 study confirm a significantly lower climate impact when using 100% SAF due to the lack of aromatics in Neste’s SAF used, and provide additional scientific data to support the use of SAF at higher concentrations than currently approved 50%”, said Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation Business at Neste.

Alan Newby, Rolls-Royce, Director Research & Technology, said: “Using SAF at high blend ratios will form a key part of aviation’s journey to net zero CO2. Not only did these tests show that our Trent XWB-84 engine can run on 100% SAF, but the results also show how additional value can be unlocked from SAF through reducing non-CO2 climate effects as well”.

The research team has reported its findings in the Copernicus journal Atmospheric Chemistry & Physics (ACP) as part of a peer-reviewed scientific process, and provides the first in-situ evidence of the climate impact mitigation potential of using pure, 100% SAF on a commercial aircraft. The ECLIF3 programme, which also includes researchers from the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Manchester, conducted in-flight emissions tests and associated ground tests in 2021. Emission and Climate Impact of Alternative Fuels (ECLIF) 

DLR conducted extensive flight tests to characterise the emissions of synthetic fuels in 2015 with the ECLIF1 campaign. These flight tests were continued in 2018 with the ECLIF2 campaign in collaboration with NASA, which showed that the climate impact of condensation trails can already be reduced by using a 50/50 blend of kerosene and SAF. 

The ECLIF3 flights took  place in 2021. These flight tests used 100% SAF on an A350 to confirm how effectively using unblended SAF reduces the number of ice crystals in contrails. The first Airbus A350-941 ever built, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines, served as the emission source aircraft, burning commercial Jet A-1 as reference fuel and HEFA-SPK (SAF). The DLR Falcon 20-E research aircraft was equipped with a wide range of instruments to measure exhaust gases, volatile and non-volatile aerosol particles and contrail ice particles. The Falcon took off from DLR’s Oberpfaffenhofen site, while the Airbus A350-941 started its journey at Toulouse Blagnac airport, with rendezvous points over the Mediterranean and southern France. The DLR Falcon then followed the Airbus A350-941 at several distances behind  to collect data on its emissions and condensation trails.

Multiple flight campaigns with the DLR Falcon tracker compared the in-flight emissions of both conventional Jet A-1 fuel and Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel, Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA).

Sustainable aviation fuels

The European Commission’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation initiative defines sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as  either synthetic aviation fuels,  advanced biofuels produced from feedstock such as agricultural or forestry residues, algae and bio-waste, or  biofuels produced from certain other feedstocks with ‘high sustainability potential’ (e.g. used cooking oil, certain animal fats) that meet the sustainability and GHG emissions criteria, as set in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

SAF are derived from renewable sources as defined above. These mainly include plant-based or waste-based fuels, but also, in the near future, renewable synthesised e-fuels and sustainably produced  hydrogen from renewable energy sources. Many of these sustainable aviation fuels are free of compounds referred to as  “aromatics”. Less aromatics in the fuel means less soot in the emissions and therefore fewer ice crystals in the condensation trails. So using sustainable aviation fuels instead of conventional Jet A-1 reduces two climate-warming effects of aviation – condensation trails and carbon dioxide emissions.

Soot, ice crystals, contrails and climate effects

Aircraft engines emit soot particles and volatile aerosols. In particular, soot acts as a condensation nucleus for small, supercooled water droplets, which immediately freeze to form ice crystals and become visible in the sky as condensation trails. The ice crystals in condensation trails can persist for several hours in cold, humid conditions at altitudes of about eight to 12 kilometres, forming high clouds known as condensation trails or cirrus clouds. These clouds can have a local warming or cooling effect, depending on the position of the sun and the nature of the underlying surface. Research has shown that the warming effect dominates globally. The occurrence of these clouds depends on weather conditions and is therefore extremely variable in time and space, so that a few contrail hotspot regions are responsible for a large proportion of the warming effect. Worldwide studies have shown that non-CO2 effects – including contrails – could account for a significant proportion of aviation’s overall climate impact.

Contrails and the resulting contrail cirrus clouds only remain in the sky for a few hours, and their warming effect is therefore short-lived. This makes the targeted use of sustainable aviation fuels on routes that predominantly produce contrails with a warming effect very attractive for short-term climate benefits. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions by replacing fossil kerosene with sustainable aviation fuels also has important long-term benefits, as carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries and drives global warming.

FLYHT Receives STC Certification for the AFIRS Edge(TM) on Boeing 737 NG Aircraft

CALGARY, AB/ June 11, 2024 / FLYHT Aerospace Solutions Ltd. (“FLYHT” or the “Company”) (TSXV:FLY)(OTCQX:FLYLF) today announced that Transport Canada has issued FLYHT a Supplemental Type Certificate (“STC”) for the flange version of the AFIRS EdgeTM, the Company’s 5G wireless data communication device, for Boeing 737 NG aircraft. The achievement of this STC enables FLYHT to ship the Edge units to Canadian Boeing 737 NG customers while at the same time familiarizing the Canadian STC into other jurisdictions to enable worldwide distribution.

Per the agreement signed in October 2023, Air North has agreed to purchase FLYHT’s innovative hardware and software services as part of the Yukon airline’s fleet renewal plans. Specifically, FLYHT’s AFIRS 228 Iridium SatCom and AFIRS Edge solutions will be installed on Air North’s Boeing 737 NG aircraft as it renews its Boeing 737 Classic fleet.

The AFIRS Edge is an aircraft interface device (AID), connecting aircraft data with electronic flight bag (EFB) applications and provides airlines with Wireless Quick Access (WQAR) capabilities, all while serving as a gateway on the aircraft for critical real-time information and onboard data storage. The Edge also serves as a data port for FLYHT’s actionable intelligence services, such as fuel management, aircraft health monitoring, real-time engine data reporting and airport gate performance monitoring. Further, when coupled with a real-time IP satellite connection, the Edge enables weather data customers to work with airlines to implement FLYHT’s weather solutions for enabling enhanced weather forecasting capabilities, providing more accurate and timely warnings of extreme weather, and in the detection and avoidance of contrail generation.

GE Nabs New Army Contract For T700 Engines Worth More Than $1.1 Billion

The Army on June 12 awarded General Electric a contract for T700 aircraft engines worth more than $1.1 billion.

Work on the new production deal is expected to be completed by June 2029, according to the Pentagon.

The GE Aerospace T700 engine powers the Army’s UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters.

GE Aerospace is also currently working on the future T901 engine for the Army, developed under the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), which will eventually power Black Hawks and Apaches.

The T901 was also intended to power the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) platform before the Army announced in February its plan to cancel development of the program, which had been in a competitive prototype phase with Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky and Bell Textron.

Along with canceling FARA, the Army noted at the time it would also delay moving into production of the T901 engine and invest in further research and development efforts.
